Commuter Challenge

8.15 am 12th January 2004

CYCLISTS are going to be puffing and panting their way to work in a race against time that will pit them against a bus and a car. Most of us never rush to work but a typical bunch of commuters have been lined up to make Lancaster and Morecambe a test-bed for a set of initiatives designed to help people to work quickly and cheaply.

They're off - A driver, passenger and cyclist will leave Morecambe at the same time to see who arrives in Lancaster first.

They're off - The Integrating Transport (IT) campaign will calculate costs of biking, driving and bus - the results may surprise some.

They're off - The race will mark the start of a three-month drive to investigate how to get people to leave their cars at home. Read all about IT!

Our four 'commuters' will be leaving the Platform, Morecambe at 8.15 am and travelling to the Town Hall at Lancaster. Our four commuters will be:

  • Bike: Professor Chris Carr, Principal St.Martins College

  • Car: Mark Fisher, Royal Lancaster Infirmary

  • Bus: David Whitaker, Lancaster City Councillor

  • Train: County Councillor Jean Yates, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transportation, and County Councillor for Heysham.
