Bus 'It'

Why not take the bus for a change? Travelling by bus can free you from the stresses and strain of road congestion as well as helping to ease the problem.

A double decker bus carries the same number of people as 20 fully occupied cars but takes up a seventh of the road space*.

Lancashire County Council is committed to improving bus services in the County and we are introducing lots of new initiatives that will benefit the travelling public:

  • In the Lancaster and Morecambe area, Lancaster bus station has recently been rebuilt and modernised. There is now electronic up to date information, a refreshment kiosk, toilets, public telephones and cycleparking.

  • Quality Bus Schemes are being introduced - Bus routes which comprise many quality features such as easy-access buses, better bus shelters and bus stops, and bus priority measures. Stagecoach Routes 3, 3A and 4, have already become Quality Bus Routes and Stagecoach routes 2 and 2A are soon to be converted.

  • New bus services - such as the Carnforth Connect which runs as both a conventional bus service with a fixed route and timetable, and also has the flexibility, within a designated area, to deviate from this route to pick up passengers who have booked the bus in advance.

  • New interchanges - such as Carnforth Connect, which co-ordinates bus with other forms of transport in an efficient way

  • Easier access to public transport information - through new developments such as traveline - public transport information 7 days a week.

In addition operators are also making improvements. Stagecoach have invested in new buses introducing 13 modern low floor Double Deck to complement the Lo-Liner buses as part of their continuing programme of improvements to the network in the Bay area.

Lancashire County Council fund many contracted services through various local bus operators.

All these improvements are part of the plans to make buses more accessible to all passengers. You can see our 'strategy for bus travel' (PDF 645k) - Lancashire County Council's Local Transport Plan 2001/02 - 2005/06 sets out, amongst other things, our strategy for bus travel within the county.
